Population is one of the most problematic threats our world is facing today which was not there about some years ago. Today the world’s human population is growing by more than 75 million people per year. About half the world lives in nations with sub-replacement fertility (rate that is not high enough to replace an area’s population), and population growth in those countries is due to immigration. Overpopulation has more disadvantages then advantages, these disadvantages consist of diseases such as Acquired immuno-deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV), people without food (Malnutrition), more crime for survival products etc.
Controlling the population is the practice which the world is trying to do from years. Such example can be of china’s one child policy in which having more than a child in a house is a crime according to the policy. Therefore Chinese, after one child have to abort their child or go for permanent sterilization. As having sex is the factor of over-population, scientists have come up to a method of contraceptives and birth control which helps all the people who want to have sex, and without the problem of getting pregnant which solves the problem of overpopulation.
Contraceptives were used in the time of Egyptians and King Charles II used condoms at that time. Apart from that people used acids as they intended to kill sperms and some people used the method of applying Olive oil, pomegranate pulp, ginger, and tobacco juice frequently on or around the vagina.
Contraceptives are used as birth control methods. Even today in the 21st century, but the only difference is that with the new and improving technology these methods have been in the present existence. And with the advancement in this field contraceptives are better to use and people have a wide variety for one to choose from. There are many different kinds of methods which are helpful in preventing pregnancy.
Contraceptives are the most helpful products made to resolve the problem of unwanted pregnancy. Contraceptives should be used by every person who is willing to have sex as it is also the question of safeness while doing sex. To be safe against different kind of STDs and STIs we should have safe sex and for that the usage of contraceptives is a must. There are many contraceptives one can use before intercourse. Some of the commonly used contraceptives are: –
Barrier contraceptives which are devices that provide a mechanical barrier between the sperm and the egg.
Examples of barrier contraceptives include the male condom, female condom, and the diaphragm.
Hormonal contraceptives are made up of female sex hormones: estrogen and progesterone (synthetic progesterone is commonly referred to as “progestin”). The most popular hormonal contraceptive is the pill, or oral contraceptive (OC). Other hormonal contraception’s include injected progestins, sub dermal implants that release progestins, Trans dermal patch, vaginal ring, and emergency contraception.
Condom is the most used contraceptive in the world. There are two types of condoms, one is the Male condom and the second is the female condom. Male condom is made in such a way that they block the sperm in meeting the ova by blocking it to enter the vagina. Moreover, the same way female condom also blocks the sperm from entering the uterus.

Emergency Contraceptive Pills are similar to birth control pills but they contain a higher dose of hormones. After having, unprotected sex within 72 hours a woman must takes theses emergency pills and with doses 12 hours apart. Emergency contraceptive pills are 79 to 85 percent effective when a woman takes the pills at time. Insertion of IUD in 7 days of unprotected sex is about 99% effective for unwanted pregnancy.
Intra-uterine Device (IUD) is one of the successful methods from birth control methods. In preventing pregnancies IUD uses a number of mechanisms: they interfere with the movement of sperm and egg, they decrease the ability of sperm to fertilize an egg, or, rarely, they prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the lining of the uterus.
You can get sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) which infect the reproductive organs of the human body. Having unsafe sex can cause such kinds of STDs like AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome ) or HIV (Human Immuno Virus) , Gonorrhea, Genital Herpes, Genital Warts, syphilis, etc which in future can sometimes lead to death.
AIDS and HIV are the two viruses that destroy the body’s ability to fight diseases. It is amongst the worst diseases and is incurable at the last stage. Transmission of AIDS can be through many ways, such ways can be a sexual activity and it can also be the sharing of the needles.
Syphilis is very difficult to detect because it is mild and it disappears quickly. It is a spreading STD and spreads quickly if untreated. It generally occurs on penis, around the vagina, mouth, and anus or on hands. It is basically a small painless open sore which is the diseases and can be cured by using the drug called penicillin.
Contraceptives are the world’s most finest and suitable solution for this problem. But here stands the new problem, which is that one doesn’t like using contraceptives and about the teens they don’t even know what contraceptives are? On the other hand their ratio of having sex of teens is more than the ratio of sex in adults. Teens are not aware about the consequences of having sex without them consulting a doctor and the worse is that a teen doesn’t even consult a doctor until the time of her delivery. So according to me the first step for this should be to aware teens about contraceptives and talk about sex in the class to overcome the problem of teen sex.
In India where it is a fully different culture compared to the other countries. According to the Indian culture many Indians generally don’t talk about sex very open and therefore some Indian teenagers are also shy of talking about sex in the society because of the Indian culture which doesn’t allow one to talk freely about sex. If teens feel shy for asking help or understanding some important issue the ultimate problem is raised is again less understanding about sex and due to this reason one can be miss guided. In this case the best thing is that Indian teenagers talk about this issue to their friends but still for them sex education is a must because they are not too open to talk about this issue. Sex education is a must but in some Indian schools the teacher themselves are shy of talking about this issue which creates a problem for a teenager to understand.
Teens who feel they cannot speak to their parents about problems they can now easily speak confidentially with their gynecologists. Doctors are required to inform and treat teens with confidentially if the teen seeks for their help. Some teenagers have done this but still teen pregnancy is the most threatening problem in India and the only solution to this in my opinion is contraceptives. Teens cannot do family planning because they too small for that but married couples can plan.
Some married couples in India do use contraceptives but most Indian couples are not aware about them and this is increasing the country’s population. Family planning should be done in this case and encourage the use of using contraceptives beginning within friends.
Also by doing a survey, I concluded that many people were not aware about these contraceptives and hence didn’t also talk about them openly even because they are much of a taboo.
Nevertheless, from all these issues I strongly believe that socially awareness about such issues should be created from micro level of schools to macro (advertisements) and morally and culturally awareness from the government in order to encourage contraceptives and to also avoid discrimination amongst girls and boys because currently in India many parents abort the girl child due to social issues like having to pay dowry during marriage and they believe that the girl wont help in earning money and contributing to the family so why should they also educate the girl child and better to kill her than bring her up and add upon the burden of her expense of upbringing, when there is no return.
Moreover, this has even been made illegal by the government of practicing sex discrimination and the dowry system. However, the law does not seem to be strict enough because these practices are even taking place now when the world is racing ahead and women are equally contributing to the progress. Hence, why should we discriminate the girls when they are equally important in our lives and this awareness should be brought as soon as possible and break the mentality of some people who still are living in the past by thinking this way and they need to be awakened soon!
However this change can only come if it comes from within. I surely have felt the need of this change to be brought about soon in society and I assure myself and you that I will try to bring about a revolution to help curb these issues and create awareness about contraceptives and their benefits as well as sex discrimination and other related issues by talking in front of doors instead of following the usual trend of talking about this topic of ‘sex and contraception’, ‘behind doors’.
